What are Safety and Security Films?

Armorcoat is a thick, optically clear barrier film that is retrofitted to the inside of windows to reinforce glass around-the-clock, helping to hold it safely in place even after multiple impacts. While the glass may break or crack, it remains adhered to the film and in most cases will still be intact in its frame, dramatically reducing the damage and injury from these dangerous hazards. Armorcoat is made from only the highest quality materials, such as tough, high tensile polyester and ultra-strong mounting adhesives – available in thickness ranging from 4 to 14 Mil (.004” to .014” or 100 to 350 microns) and offered in clear and solar control versions. The tensile strength, coupled with the film’s elasticity and resistance to shear aids in the ability of eliminating the chance of objects penetrating the glass and film.

Choosing the Appropriate Film Thickness

Armorcoat security films are available in the following thicknesses: 4 Mil, 7 Mil, 8 Mil, 10 Mil, 11 Mil, and 14 Mil.

4 Mil - These films are generally considered to be safety films rather than true security films. They do an excellent job holding fragments together after one or two hits or accidental damage, but offer little resistance to repeated blows.

7/8 Mil - Offers greater resistance to breakage, and is the standard security product, suitable for most applications.

10 /11 Mil - These films offer even more protection, and are recommended for high-risk areas, such as computer or electronics store windows, areas where money is being handled or stored, glass in or beside doors, and areas where there is a danger to persons as well as property. They also offer some level of protection in case of explosions, where the greatest danger to building occupants is flying glass.

14 Mil - Offers the ultimate in protection in highest-risk areas, and give significant protection from explosions.

There is also a wide range of tinted, laminated, or multi-layered security films (in silver, or neutral grey) that provide both solar control and security in the same film.
